Campaign against one off sale of Ivory

12.04.16pm GMT Sat 13th Feb 2010

Today Cllr Elvie Lowe signed the petition supporting the Lib Dem led campaign against a one off sale of Ivory.

For those that don't know, these countries are asking permission for a one-off sale of their ivory stocks. The decision will be made at a meeting of CITES (a body controlling trade in endangered species) next month. Catherine Bearder Lib Dem MEP has been lobbied on the issue by a number of delegations from Africa, because of her conservation background and her role on the Parliament's Africa delegation.

Elvie said: "To allow this one off sale would seem to encourage more poaching-stock-piling. Then it's more than likely to open the door to a further request for a one off sale. I supported the petition because I believe not to stop this would set a dangerous precedent".
