Campaigning for Sittingbourne and Sheppey

Letter to East Kent Gazette

Written by David Spurling on Fri 23rd Oct 2009

Dear Sir /madam

I was interested to see Harry Farrow's views on free travel in your newspaper.

Perhaps we could look at the local line from Sittingbourne to Sheppey as a start. There seems to be little logic for having free buses for all over 60s but not for the very local train service which both compete and act as a complement for such a service.

Apart from the very crowded trains to mainly cater for school children in the evening the rest of the time there seems to be little travel. Since the company seems very reluctant to do anything rash like collecting fares except at Sheerness and Sittingbourne in the off-peak any way it might be better to make it free , in the first place and thus reduce some congestion from the roads at little cost.
